FINDING A NICHE

ALL THE MATERIAL IS TAKEN FROM

http://ezinearticles.com/?Finding-a-Niche---The-7-Step-Formula&id=2649559

Finding a Niche - The 7 Step Formula
By Wayne Sharer and Danny Gonzalez

Finding a niche and choosing a niche product does not have to be massively difficult. Of course, the bottom line is profit, otherwise you would not be in a business online. Finding a niche that is profitable then is the real task.
Step 1 - What are you passionate about?
This is always the best place to start for one simple reason: you are already motivated to do it! Plus, you are already an expert, whether you think so or not. If it is something that you know no one spends money on, then get passionate about something else!
Step 2 - Is there a problem to be solved?
It's hard for me to imagine that any niche with a profitable following of potential customers doesn't have a problem to be solved. But if your niche is selling baseballs, you might be hard pressed to have a problem that leads to profit.
So think about it. Your considering the niche of wizzywigs. What problem is associated with wizzywigs? If it is a niche you are passionate about, you should be able to come up with a list of 5 or 10 problems real quick.
Step 3 - Do you have knowledge and experience in the niche you're pondering?
Ask yourself how long you have been dealing with the things in your niche? If you have a good niche, with real problems, you probably understand very well what potential customers will need. You may have only been passionate about the niche for a short time, or maybe a long time. But time isn't the only factor in having knowledge.
But it's likely that you have some passion you have dealt with personally for years, so you have years of experience, even if you never did it for money.
Step 4 - Select a Business Model
In the online world where targeted traffic, and customer lists are king, you need an appropriate business model know where to start looking for your highly targeted traffic to make profits. The most common way to get started is with affiliate products.
Affiliate marketing of information products yields the highest payoff per sale, so it is the recommended way to start in any niche.
But you can start with selling your own product if you want to. Some choose MLM or multi-level marketing companies, and others may choose marketing services. Regardless, you need a validated model to get off on the right foot.
Step 5 - Select your long tail keywords
Now you need to go to Google's key word tool and analyze the competition. Competition, in this case, is good. You don't want keywords with no competition. It means that no one will be looking for what you have! No competition, no targeted website traffic.
Keyword research and analysis is a whole topic on it's own. Just let it be said that you need to spend some time in Google's Keyword Tool.
Step 6 - Determine the amount of Activity
With the key word phrases you just researched, go into Google's search engine and see who your competitors are and where your customers congregate online. Find the forums, discussion areas, Google and Yahoo Groups and places like this. If there are none, you may not have a good niche!
Once again, no targeted audience congregating online probably means to targeted traffic!
Step 7 - Is it a Seasonal Niche?
It is good to know if you are in a season niche or not. Some are obvious, like Valentines gifts, and Mother's Day gifts. But others may not be so plain to see. Use Google Trends to help you analyze the seasons.
You may be happy with a seasonal niche, but if your looking for a full time online business, then you want to be able to fill in the "full time."
That's it - seven simple steps for finding a niche. But remember, if it has everything above, but people don't spend money to get information or products for the niche, then don't waste your time!

Developers - AdSense API released

Google has announced a new API for AdSense (beta of course like everything else Google). I got really excited as I am a developer and thought it would be cool. It's sort of cool but wasn't quite what I was expecting.
For a start you need a minimum of 100,000 daily page views which rules out most people.
The purpose of this API is to set up and configure AdSense ads for your visitors without them leaving your site and going to the AdSense website. From your site you can sign up new users and choose ads for them. While they are using your site to place their ads, you will receive a (currently undisclosed) revenue share of what they make. Sweet!
Using the AdSense API, you can enable users to perform a variety of AdSense functions without leaving your website, including the following:
- Create an AdSense account
- Manage an AdSense account
- Create and modify AdSense for content ad units and link units, AdSense for search boxes, and Referrals
- View detailed reports to monitor performance and earnings

The AdSense API is mainly geared at web hosting, wiki, blogging and web publishing sites as they can be portals for the people using those sites to put AdSense in their content and make money. It can be accessed by SOAP so can be accessed by most modern programming languages like Java and C#. I haven't checked the terms and conditions but you should be able to make this into a desktop application.
Hopefully it will become more open and I will be able to give it a go.

Keyword density analyser

The Google spider indexes your pages to find keywords. You can check your webpage's keyword density using the keyword tool below. As you know, having keywords in your text is the most important thing to get well targeted ads. I already posted on ways to implement keywords and content.
Just visit web address below and your content will be analysed and your keywords ranked.

Search On Your Own Site

Seeing as I never blogged about this, I thought that this would be a great time to talk about the new way of using AdSense for Search - from within your own webpage! Originally, when someone does a Google Search, they are taken to google.com and you can customize the colour and logo but it didn't feel like your own site. However, if you click "Open results within my own site" within More Options, you can choose a page for your search results to land on. You just need to make a landing page for the search results with your header footer and various sidebars and place code in that page where you want the search results - simple. This time you will get 2 sets of code however: one for the search box and one for the results page. And best of all, it works with all the features such as competitive filtering and such like so if you have a site (not like a blogger blog) you should convert now. Enjoy (note: I am going to be blogging more often now).

Find Money with Google's AdSense for Search Program By Eric Giguere

ALL THE MATERIAL IS TAKEN FROM

http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=418661

Want to provide a useful service on your site (and perhaps even make a bit of money from it)? In this second of a three-part series, veteran author and Web developer Eric Giguere tells you all about Google's AdSense search and how you can use it to make your Web site more profitable.
For more information on Web Design, visit our Web Design Reference Guide or sign up for our Web Design Newsletter
Google's AdSense program actually consists of (so far) three separate advertising programs. Thefirst article in this series focused on the main program, AdSense for content. In this installment, we look at the second program, AdSense for search, a great way for site owners to make money from search.

Google's Free Search Programs

Long before AdSense for search came along, Google offered three free search services for third-party websites. Known collectively as Google Free, these services still exist today:
  • Google Free web search for searching the Web using Google's standard search algorithms
  • Google Free SafeSearch for searching the Web using an index that excludes adult and other "unsafe" sites
  • Google Free web search with site search for searching either the Web or only the site's own pages
All three programs are accessed from the main Google Free page on the Google website. In fact, all three programs are almost identical in nature. You start by including the Google-supplied HTML code on one of our web pages. When the page is displayed, a simple search form is displayed. When the user submits the form, Google displays the search results. Very simple to implement.
For many sites, the site search program is a quick and easy way to provide site-specific search capabilities without installing any indexing software on the server. Of course, Google Free only searches pages found in the Google index, so if your sites' pages aren't indexed, the site-specific doesn't do you much good.
Note that to better integrate with your site, the colors of the Google Free results page can be chosen to match your site's color scheme.

AdSense allows web publishers to deliver Google ads that are relevant to what their readers see on their webpages and increase their site's revenue potential.
Google AdSense for search
AdSense for search is one feature of Google AdSense that allows you to offer users Google search right from your site. You can view the top queries users performed on your search box, and you'll generate earnings when users click on ads on the search results pages.
Referrals
The referrals feature of AdSense allows publishers to refer users to products and services in order to generate more revenue. Products and earnings vary depending on your location.
Account Settings
The email address that you use to log in to your AdSense account. This is the address to which we'll send all AdSense-related communications to you.
Account type
Generally, if you are a business with 20 or more employees, you should apply as a Business account. Individual publishers, or businesses with less than 20 employees, should sign up as an Individual account. There's no difference in the services or payment structure between Individual and Business accounts. Business account payments will be made payable to the Company Name, while Individual accounts are paid out to the Payee Name of the account holder.
Account activation
After submitting an AdSense application and verifying your email address, the AdSense team will evaluate your application and send you an email within 1-2 days. If accepted into the program, you'll be able to log in to your new account and copy-and-paste the AdSense ad code into your webpages to begin serving ads. This activates your AdSense account.
Account creation
An AdSense account will be created for you if your application to the program is accepted. You'll then be able to log in to and activate your account.
Address, Valid Mailing
A valid mailing address is a full and complete physical address. Participation in AdSense requires a valid mailing address in order to receive your Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Your AdSense login is also referred to as your account email. This is the email address you use to log in to your Google AdSense account.
Ad Creation and Display
The HTML that is placed on any page of an approved site by the publisher who owns the site, allowing ads to be shown on that page in a specific ad layout format.
Ad format
The way the ads are displayed on a publisher's site. You can choose the format that best fits your site. For example, the banner ad layout will display up to 2 ads horizontally across the page and the skyscraper will display up to 4 ads vertically. All formats can be viewed on our Ad Formats page.
Ad unit
A set of ads displayed as a result of one piece of the AdSense ad code.
AdSense unit
An AdSense unit is a saved ad unit with a specific set of ad settings that you've customized within your account. When you create an AdSense unit and paste the code for that unit to your pages, you can update the AdSense unit settings within your account to see changes on all pages displaying that AdSense unit code.
Ad rank/Positioning
An ad's position on a webpage is determined by a combination of its maximum cost-per-click (price) and clickthrough rate (performance).
Alternate ads
Alternate Ads allow you to monetize your ad space in the event that Google is unable to serve targeted ads to your page. By specifying an image or ad server of your choice, you can make sure that your advertising space is always being used effectively, either by targeted AdSense ads, or by your own choice of content. Alternate Ads, if specified, will be shown when there are no targeted ads available for your page. The ad space will not be branded as 'Ads by Google.'
Color palette
AdSense offers publishers the ability to customize the colors of ads that appear on their sites. Color palettes allow you to make sure that the ad text, background, and border colors complement your website. For added variety and freshness, you can even choose to rotate through up to 4 different color palettes at a time.
Competing ads
Competing ads are any content-targeted ads as well as text-based ads that mimic Google texts ads or appear to be associated with Google text ads on your site. As noted in the AdSense program policies, competing ads aren't permitted to be displayed on the same page or site as Google ads. However, we do allow affliate or limited-text links.
Destination URL
This is the URL to which ads link. This is the page users see when they click through to an advertiser's site from an ad. You will need to know this URL if you would like to add it to your URL filter list and block an advertiser's ads from appearing on your site.
Display URL
This is the URL displayed on ads to identify the advertiser's site to users.
Image Ad
Image ads are graphical ads offered in several ad formats. Examples of image ads are available on our Ad Formats page.
Incentives
Webpages may not include incentives of any kind for users to click on ads. This includes encouraging users to click on the ads or to visit the advertisers' sites as well as drawing any undue attention to the ads. For more details, review our program policies.
Link unit
Link units are a type of ad format that displays a list of links relevant to the content of any page. When a user clicks on a link, they're taken to a page of related advertisements. You can view examples of all available link unit formats on our Ad Formats page.
Network performance
Network performance is a star rating that can help you decide which products to refer. Once we have enough data to make reliable predictions, we assign each product a star rating that indicates how we expect it to perform relative to other products that you may select. Please keep in mind that that these predictions aren't always exact and that performance will vary greatly depending on a variety of factors, including how you decide to implement the ad on your site.
Public service ad (PSA)
PSAs are non-profit organization ads that are served to pages when targeted ads are unavailable, or when Google is unable to gather content from the page. Publishers do not receive earnings for clicks made on PSAs.
Earnings & Payments
This is the amount an advertiser actually pays for each impression of his/her ad. The AdWords Discounter automatically gives advertisers the lowest possible price in order to maintain their ad's position. The actual CPM will be equal to or less than the maximum CPM specified.
Ad impression
An ad impression is reported whenever an individual ad is displayed on your website. Different ad formats will display varying numbers of ads; for example, each time a vertical banner appears on your site, you'll see two ad impressions in your reports. In addition, keep in mind that the number of ads in any ad unit may vary depending on whether the ad unit is displaying standard text ads, expanded text ads, or image ads.
Adjustments
Your earnings may include debits or credits for various reasons, all of which are listed on your Payment History page. Possible adjustments include:
* AdSense for search fees: as stated in the Google AdSense Terms and Conditions, your AdSense for search earnings may be offset by fees. This applies to a small number of publishers only - for more information, browse AdSense Support.
* Check fees: costs associated with special delivery of checks, or stop payment requests * Invalid clicks: publishers are not remunerated for clicks that are discovered to be invalid. If clicks currently showing in your reports are deemed to be invalid, the earnings will be adjusted and advertisers will be reimbursed.
* Other: this covers debits or credits not included in other categories, such as those associated with earnings transfers or costs related to secured express delivery. This category may also include occasional deductions of earnings accrued from advertisers who have defaulted on payment, as noted in the Payment section of our Terms and Conditions.
Ad unit impression
An ad unit impression is generated every time a user views an ad unit on your page. For example, if you have a page displaying three ad units and it is viewed twice, you will generate six ad unit impressions and two page impressions.
Balance at end of month
Your Payment History page will show the balance in your AdSense account at the end of every month. This amount reflects verified earnings at the close of that month. If your account balance at the end of the month is greater than US$100 and there are no payment holds on your account, you should be scheduled for a payment the following month.
Conversion
A conversion, for the purposes of your referral reports, occurs whenever a user you've referred completes the necessary actions in order for you to receive earnings for that referral. The exact event and earnings for each referral vary by product.
Cost-per-action (CPA)
The cost-per-action (CPA) is the amount an advertiser pays when a user completes a certain action. For example, an airline might pay a certain CPA every time a user clicks on their ad and then purchases a plane ticket.
Cost-per-click (CPC)
The CPC is the amount an advertiser pays each time a user clicks on his/her ad. Google AdWords has a CPC pricing system.
Cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM)
The CPM is the amount an advertiser pays for every 1000 times a user views his/her ad and an impression is recorded.

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)
Electronic Funds Transfer, or EFT, is a payment method that directly deposits your AdSense earnings into your bank account. It is available to publishers in a number of locations.
Invalid click or impression
Clicks or page impressions generated through prohibited means, and intended to artificially increase click or impression counts on a publisher account. Google's proprietary technology analyzes clicks and impressions to determine whether they fit a pattern of use intended to artificially drive up an advertiser's clicks or a publisher's earnings. Clicks or impressions deemed by us to be invalid should not be included in your earnings.
Maximum cost-per-thousand-impressions
The maximum cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) an advertiser is willing to pay. The AdWords Discounter automatically reduces this amount so that the actual CPM the advertiser is charged is just one cent more than the minimum necessary to keep his/her ad's position on the page.
Personal Identification Number (PIN)
In order to become eligible to receive payments for your AdSense account, all publishers are required to enter a Personal Identification Number (PIN). PINs are printed on white 4.5 x 6 inch (11.4 x 15.2 cm) postcards and sent via standard mail.
Revenue share
Each AdSense publisher receives a percentage of the cost an advertiser pays for user clicks or impressions on their ad. This percentage is referred to as the revenue share. Google does not disclose the revenue share for AdSense.
Revenue
Your AdSense revenue is comprised of the earnings you receive from all AdSense products. This includes AdSense for content earnings from users clicks and/or impressions on Google ads, AdSense for search earnings from clicks on ads on search results pages, and referral earnings from successful conversions.
Features
A publisher-specified group of pages used for reporting purposes. Publishers can create channels to track specific metrics across pages, sites, and domains.
Competitive Ad Filter list
A list that AdSense publishers can create and store in their accounts in order to block ads from certain URLs from running on their sites. After a publisher adds a URL to the list, ads for that website list will not run on his/her site.
Custom channel
Custom channels are a tool you can use to view more detailed reports about the performance of specific pages and ad units. Our Optimizing with Channels guide provides a good, detailed explanation of how to use custom channels effectively.

Section targeting
Our section targeting feature allows you to improve your ad targeting by highlighting specific sections of HTML and text content that you'd like our crawler to emphasize or ignore.
URL channels
URL channels are a tool you can use to view more detailed reports about the performance of ads on specific domains. Our Optimizing with Channels guide provides a good, detailed explanation of how to use URL channels effectively.
Reports
In AdSense publisher reports, a click corresponds to a user's click on any ad on a publisher's page. The Click column may also include clicks that are deemed to be invalid, and for which no earnings are generated. Clicks on PSAs are not included in publisher reports.
Clickthrough rate (CTR)
In AdSense publisher reports, clickthrough rate (CTR) is the number of clicks an ad receives divided by the number of times the ad, ad unit, or page is shown, depending on the type of impressions you're viewing.
Effective CPM
From a publisher's perspective, the effective cost-per-thousand impressions (eCPM) is a useful way to compare revenue across different channels and advertising programs. It is calculated by dividing total earnings by the number of impressions in thousands. For example, if a publisher earned $180 from 45,000 impressions, the eCPM would equal $180/45, or $4.00. However, please keep in mind that eCPM is a reporting feature that does not represent the actual amount paid to a publisher.
Emailable report
An emailable report is a saved report template that you can schedule to be emailed to you using the Report Manager page within your account.
Page Impression
A page impression is generated every time a user views a page displaying Google ads. We will count one page impression regardless of the number of ads displayed on that page. For example, if you have a page displaying three ad units and it is viewed twice, you will generate two page impressions and six ad unit impressions.
Payments
The Payments column on your Payment History page will display payments that have been sent to you, either by check or by Electronic Funds Transfer. You can click on the details link associated with any payment for additional details about the payment date and amount, as well as tracking information and exchange rates, if applicable.
Report template
A report template is an advanced report with settings that you've named and saved for quick access in the future. Saved report templates will appear on your Overview page and can be accessed with one click. Any report template can be sent to you by email.

AdSense for search publishers can view the top 25 terms, or queries, users searched for using their AdSense for search boxes. Only queries performed more than once will be displayed.

Cybersquatting
Sites such as these are not allowed to run the AdSense ad code. Cybersquatting is using a domain name with bad-faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else. Typosquatting is a form of cybersquatting, based on the probability that a certain number of Internet users will mistype the name of a URL when surfing.
Frames

Editorial Guidelines
To run AdWords ads on Google, search, and content sites or products in our growing ad network, all AdWords advertisers must follow these guidelines.

Mozilla Firefox is a web browser with pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing, and privacy and security features. AdSense publishers can generate earnings by referring users to download Firefox using the AdSense referrals feature.

An ad placement can be an entire website or a specific sub-set of ad units within that site, such as only ad units on sports pages or all ad units at the top of the page.

Google Adsense: Not Just Copy and Paste

How many times have you seen an ad campaign running for "Google Adsense" that makes it sound so easy to make revenue by just copying and pasting their code onto your website? After all the research I have done onThe following are techniques that must be implemented in order to really make money with Google Adsense:

Tip #1

Design a website that is Google Adsense friendly. In other words, make sure that your website has much content that is keyword rich and make sure your keyword density is decent. Make sure that you are using the most beneficial keywords for your niche. Try to choose keywords that cost more for pay per click. For example, if a keyword such as "dog training" cost $2.00 per click to run an ad campaign, you can be well assured that you will make around half of that per click. By choosing the top competitive keywords, you will increase your Adsense revenue considerably. Once indexed, Google will then be able to known what correct ads to place on your website.

Tip #2

Generate traffic to your website using a number of different techniques.

Writing articles: By writing articles at least once a week and submitting them to article directories such as Ezine. The more article directories that you submit to, the more back links you are creating for your website. You can pay for article directory submission, which can cost as little as $80 every quarter.

Search Engine Directory Submissions: By submitting your website URL to search engine friendly directories, you are creating back links back to your website. Make sure that you only submit to search engine directories with aGoogle page rank of four or higher. You can pay around $11.00 per website to submit to 100 directories with a page rank of four or higher.

Create ads: By publishing classified ads, you are advertising your website and creating back links back to your website. US Free Ads and Domestic Sale are two places that you can submit your ad to for free.

Just remember back links, back links, back links!

Nothing wrong with that, in fact it makes perfect business sense. Except that you don’t really need those lists, there is a better proven way to increase your Adsense earnings.
The Adsense Secret Is All About Finding A Niche
The most important Adsense secret you will discover is that to make money and be successful, all you need to do is to stick to the basic rules for success in online marketing. The basics are that you need to find a niche that is not so competitive and one which you can contribute something special to based on your past experience, knowledge and skills. Everything else will then fall into place after this. Virtually every subject and topic you can think of will have relevant and valuable keywords.
This is in sharp contrast to the approach being encouraged by list-sellers. Which is to start by finding high-paying valuable keywords and then creating sites or blogs based on them. To start with Google do not like the idea because one of their rules is that you should not create a site or blog for the sole purpose of making money from Adsense. Of course it is easy to get round this one by quickly creating some products around your site and you really don’t need to care whether they sell or not, but who are you fooling?
The World Wide Web is increasingly busy and increasingly competitive and what this means is that niches are becoming increasingly vital and critical to online success.
You Will Earn More From Adsense With Multiple Sites/Blogs
Once you’ve found your niche, you can create a number of different sites narrowing your niche even further in different directions. I’ve used this strategy very successfully and I find that I am constantly coming up with new ideas for new sites without leaving my area of expertise. Of course I create relevant links between my different sites so as to maximize on the traffic that I receive. The important word here is “relevant”. There is nothing that puts off folks more than clicking on a link only to find that it is barely relevant to the information they are seeking. You’re wasting their time and they will not appreciate it. Better not to link at all in the first place.
What some high-earning Adsense folks have done is to create numerous blogs (some up to 50 and even more.) This strategy makes sense because the more pages you have with Adsense ads on them, the higher the chances of somebody clicking on some of the ads and therefore the higher your potential income. What I can’t imagine is how they manage to keep all the different blogs fed with quality content. I once tried this strategy with just one or two sites and it was very exhausting getting content for sites outside my area of expertise. There are increasing reports of incidents of pirated online content and I guess you now understand part of the reason why.
When you stick to one subject, keeping all your blogs fed with content becomes a breeze. You simply take one idea and modify it or slant it differently for the different sites. Even more important, it is easy to use the same valuable Adsense keywords for all the sites as you discover them.
A Free Tool To Help You Find Valuable Adsense Keywords
Here is a valuable tool that I use myself to constantly research valuable Adsense keywords. While you do not need those valuable Adsense keywords lists, you need to constantly research valuable Adsense keywords for yourself. Top Adsense earners spend a vast majority of their time doing this. You need to do the same if you want to be earn a serious income from the Adsense program.

ADSENSE TOP SECRETS

HOW TO IMPROVE ADSENSE REVENUE

by Dominik Mueller

ALL THE MATERIAL IS TAKEN FROM  http://websitetips.com/articles/marketing/adsenserevenue/

Dear Reader,
This e-commerce article will help you make more money with Google AdSense and Yahoo Publishing Network. All information given below does not infringe any TOS of the respective service, of course.
First of all, PPC ads like those provided by AdSense or YPN are great ways to earn money online, especially if you have an established and content-rich website. AdSense ads are targeted ads, which means they fit to the site's content. Therefore it's likely they will meet the visitors' interests. This usually leads to a high click-through ratio (CTR) on AdSense ads compared to the CTR of normal non-targeted banner ads.
Now, how can you increase your AdSense earnings once you have placed the ads on your site? Don't worry, there is much you can do.
First, let's take a look at the factors which directly influence ad performances:
  • unique visitors and page impressions
  • CTR
  • targeting
  • CPC
You will increase your PPC revenue by improving one or more of the above factors.

1. Improving the Web site's traffic

By driving more visitors to your site you will probably increase the number of ad clicks, because there are more people who see the ads. In addition, if you can get more page impressions on your website you will also have more ad impressions which might result in higher PPC earnings.
Attracting more visitors can be achieved by optimizing your website for the search engines, but also by adding more high quality content and unique services to your site. Also, your site should have at least an “okay design,” because your visitors will probably not go to your site again if it looks too terrific. In case you don't know how to do search engine optimization: I will write an article on this topic as well in the future.
Better traffic stats will increase the number of ad impressions. However, this does not mean you have got a higher CTR. The CTR could still be the same or even lower than before though, so you also need to improve another of the above factors.

2. How to get a higher CTR

There are many options you can choose to get a higher click ratio.
For instance, you have the possibility to change the ads themselves.

2.1 Ad Colors

In general you have two kinds of ad colors to choose from:
  • ads that stand out, and
  • ads that blend in.
Both may have their positives and negatives, but all in all you need to experiment with those types of color palettes to see which works best with your site. In my personal experience - and what I have been told from most webmasters I have talked to - colors that blend in perform better. Others have experienced better click ratios from outstanding ad colors though, so this is something you really should try out yourself. Whatever option you choose, you should at least try your ads to fit to the website's design and color scheme though.
My personal tip is: Match the ad's text color with the color of your Web site's content's text color and match the link color of the ad with your site's link color.

2.2 Ad Placement

Another factor incfluencing the CTR is the placement of your ad. AdSense ads should not be hidden from your visitors, but they should be visible at first sight. Again, there are still several places you can choose for your ads to appear.
Text ads seem to attract most clicks at the top or in the center of a website's content area - especially on websites with much text content.
Do you already know the so-called “heat map” by Google? It illustrates profitable ad placements on an example site layout. The fields which are colored dark orange experience the best performance while those fields with a brighter color do not perform that well.
Anyway, the heat map is only a tip for you. It's based on Google's researches from many different websites with AdSense ads, but the heat map possibly does not show the perfect ad placement area for your own site. So - again - it's up to you to try where on your website ads work best.
Editor note:
To view Google's heat map, see Where should I place Google ads on my pages?
See also WebsiteTips.com's Web Resources Internet Marketing, Online MarketingGoogle AdSense.
To give you a direction: On sites with an article, ads which are placed directly below the article seem to do quite well. In addition, you should also place an ad above the article, so people can click on it at the top and at the bottom of the page.
Important is that ads are placed where the user's eyes are likely to focus on them. You should also try to place the ads throughout your whole site, because this adds variety across your site and users have more selection. Also, more ads mean more revenue, in my experience.
In case you're running a forum please pay attention to the “AdSense on Forums” section below. There I will discuss the specific placement criteria for forums.

2.3 Ad Format

The third way to improve ad performance is to choose another ad format. AdSense provides you with many different ad formats.
In general, wide formats seem to perform better than narrow formats. This is because people can read more words at a time without having to skip a line. I've experienced that the 336x280 large rectangle, the 250x250 square and the 160x600 wide skyscraper have done best on my sites. These are quite big ad formats, of course, so they need lots of space, but if they're placed well they usually generate more income than the smaller and narrow ad formats.
Another good format is the wide 728x90 leaderboard, which does best under the editorial content of a web page or directly under the page header, in my experience. The 468x60 banner format does not convert that well, but it can still be placed in areas where there isn't much space available, i.e. directly in the page header (next to the logo) or within articles.

3. Targeting

The targeting of PPC ads is very important, because targeted ads perform much better than untargeted banners. Therefore you should make sure all ads on your website show targeted ads which fit to your site's content. This will increase the CTR of the ads and also result in a better branding of your site, because people only find content and links that fit to your site's topic.
Many webmaster have problems with ads that don't show proper text links. Anyway, it's quite easy to target PPC ads.
The first you should do is to control whether the site has enough content. The more text content there is the faster and more accurate your ads will be targeted by Google's bots. So you should add additional content to your site to get better ads.
If you still don't get advertising links that fit to your site's content and thus to your visitors' interests, you should implement section targeting.
Section targeting is a very useful tool to help Google find the best ads for your site. It allows you to suggest sections of your text content that you'd like Google to emphasize when matching ads to your site's content.
You can implement section targeting by adding special HTML comments to your site's HTML code.
The HTML tags to emphasize a page section take the following format:
<!- google_ad_section_start ->
<!- google_ad_section_end ->
If you want Google to ignore specific sections of your site when targeting ads you need to use the following comment tag:
<!- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) ->
Here's an example of how your site's code should look like after implementing section targeting:
<html><head><title>Your Site's Title</title></head>
<body>
This is text content of your Web page.
<!- google_ad_section_start ->
This is the text which you want Google to emphasize when targeting ads.
<!- google_ad_section_end ->
Here might also be some content.
</body>
</html>
Please keep in mind a significant amount of content should be placed within the section targeting tags, because insufficient content might result in less relevant ads to appear on your site. Also, it is against Google's TOS to use ad targeting to display ads which don't fit to your site's content, so you only may use section targeting to emphasize content sections of your site which include proper content.
Another way to improve ad targeting for your site is to emphasize specific terms by making them bold (<strong> or <em>) or making them a heading (<h1> or <h2>). Google will pay special attention to emphasized terms and phrases within your Web page.

4. CPC

The fourth way to improve your total advertising income is to get a higher cost per click on ads displayed on your site. But how to increase the CPC?
First of all, you should do some research on different keywords which fit to your site's topic. Go to Google and perform searches for these keywords. The more AdWords ads appear in the right bar of Google's search results the likelier it is that ads for the regarding keyword have got a higher CPC. In addition, you can take advantage of Overture's Bidtool to determine which keywords pay well in terms of PPC advertising. Although the Overture tool is a direct indicator for the YPN, you can still use it to get a good idea of the keywords' click prices.
Now that you know which keywords AdSense should display ads for on your site the only thing you need to do is to target ads for the keyword(s) you have chosen. You can do this by adding additional and targeted content and by emphasizing words or complete sections of your web page, as explained above.

5. Google Search Box

AdSense also offers the possibility to implement Google Search into your website. Google Search is a useful service for your users, it can search either your site or the whole Internet. The search results pages can be customized to fit with your site's theme, and you'll be paid for every valid click on the ads that appear. The search box is also great to earn money from visitors who did not find what they were looking for on your site, because the search box allows them to search exactly for what they have been looking for and it will display ads that are targeted based on the keyword(s) they search for.
So the Google Search Box can earn you some extra money. You should not expect too much from the search box though. I have only been able to increase income by 1 to 3 per cent through Google Search.

6. Optimization Tips for Forums

While I have already written much about placing ads on “usual” websites here are some tips on how to make more money from PPC ads displayed within forums:

Ad Format & Placement

160x600 Skyscraper ads placed above the fold on the left side of your forum seem to perform very well. However, you should also place a 728x90 leaderboard ad below the forum's header. The combination of these two ad formats works well and results in a high CTR, in my experience.
This can also be seen in Google's Heat Map and I can only confirm the ad placements suggested by the heat map.
In addition, you should also place an ad between the first and the second post of the threads in the forum. There already exists a script for vBulletin which automatically displays PPC ads in this place. You should integrate this script to your forum to improve PPC income.
Above I have written that a leaderboard ad directly below the editorial content would work fine. This suggestion also works with forums. Therefore it is a good idea to place a leaderboard ad directly below the last post of the thread, because user's who read the whole thread might be looking for the next link to click on - and what's a better link than a targeted PPC link?
Anyway, this would require you to remove the leaderboard ad below the forum's header, because you may only display 3 AdSense ads per page. I would recommend to do so, because the leaderboard ad at the bottom of the page seems to perform better than the ad below the header, in my experience (and against Google's heat map). Instead, I would place one of Google's horizontal link units below the header (a link unit may be placed as an additional ad, so you can display more than 3 ads per page).
Over all you should try to use ads that blend in, because people spend lots of time in forums and the forum design should not be disrupted by outstanding ad colors.
Google's Search Box can also be implemented into your forum. I'd suggest to place it directly in the forum's search tool. For instance, dnforum.com offers its members to use both the forum's and Google's site search.
Well, that's it. I think I've written everything which came up to my mind at the moment.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this article and at least some of the above information will be useful for you.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Dominik Mueller
